How to Make a Simple Outfit Look More Expensive With Jewelry

Some of the best outfits aren't complicated at all.

A great white shirt. A black dress. Jeans and a simple tank. A beautiful blazer with a T-shirt underneath.

I've always believed you don't need an overflowing closet—or an expensive one—to look polished. In fact, some of the women whose style I admire most wear incredibly simple clothes.

The difference is in how they finish the outfit.

And that's where jewelry can completely change things.

1. Choose one piece that gets noticed

When an outfit is simple, you have room to wear something with a little more presence.

A bold cuff. An oversized ring. A beautiful pair of earrings. A statement necklace.

You don't necessarily need all four.

Choosing one piece that feels intentional can make even the simplest outfit look considered and pulled together.

There's also something about wearing a bolder piece of jewelry that communicates confidence. It says, I chose this. I love it. And I'm comfortable being noticed.

2. Pay attention to scale

One of the easiest ways to elevate a basic outfit is to play with proportion.

A delicate necklace can be beautiful, but sometimes a larger necklace against a crisp white shirt or a substantial cuff with a sleeveless dress creates exactly the contrast the outfit needs.

Don't automatically assume bigger jewelry means dressier jewelry, either.

I love substantial pieces with jeans, T-shirts, button-downs and sweaters. That unexpected combination is often what makes an outfit interesting.

3. Let your jewelry be the interesting part

If you're wearing a statement piece, you don't have to compete with it.

A simple black dress becomes the backdrop for an incredible necklace. A white shirt makes gold jewelry stand out. A neutral sweater suddenly feels much more sophisticated with a beautiful pair of earrings.

This is one of my favorite ways to get more from the clothes I already own.

Instead of asking, What else does this outfit need? try asking:

What one thing would make this outfit feel like me?

Sometimes the answer isn't another piece of clothing. It's the jewelry.

4. Don't save your good jewelry for special occasions

This may be my biggest rule.

Wear it.

Wear the beautiful earrings to lunch. Wear the statement ring with your jeans. Put on the cuff with the T-shirt. Wear the necklace even if you're not going anywhere particularly exciting.

We have a tendency to save beautiful things for some future occasion worthy of them.

I've reached a point in my life where I don't want to do that anymore.

An ordinary Tuesday is reason enough.

5. Looking polished doesn't mean looking perfect

There's a difference between looking expensive and looking like you tried very hard to look expensive.

The goal isn't perfection. It's intention.

Maybe your hair is pulled back, you're wearing jeans and a white shirt, and you add a beautiful pair of gold earrings.

That's enough.

The jewelry becomes that finishing detail that says you thought about what you put on—even when getting dressed took five minutes.

And maybe that's really the secret.

You don't need more. You need pieces that feel like you.

As I've gotten older, I've become much less interested in having more things and much more interested in having the right things.

The clothes I reach for over and over.

The jewelry that instantly makes me feel pulled together.

The pieces that make me stand a little taller when I put them on.

Because great style isn't really about looking expensive.

It's about knowing yourself well enough to know what makes you feel good—and wearing it with confidence.

And that might be the most luxurious thing of all.
